iPad Pro 11inch vs 12.9 inch
Which ipad to purchase? It’s time to make the definitive decision. The iPad Pro 11? Or the iPad Pro 12.9? Let’s get into it.
The iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 share the same internals, the only difference is the $200 dollar price difference between the two tablets. The iPad Pro 11 retails at base for $799 and the iPad Pro 12.9 retails at base for $999.
There is also an inherent added expense as all of the apple accessories share a similar pricing relationship to the tablets themselves. The iPad Pro 11 cases and keyboards are going to be a bit cheaper than the iPad Pro 12.9.
To break it down further…
Is this a companion device? (OR) Is this a laptop replacement?
As a graphic designer, I see the iPad Pro as a companion device. It could never replace my laptop. That said, I wanted the convenience of a tablet with a stylus. This is where the iPad Pro 11 shines. Of the 2 devices, the iPad Pro 11 is the definitive tablet. It’s not trying to be anything more or less. It is about the same size as Apple’s standard iPads of the past with a larger screen. Traveling with the iPad Pro 11 is a joy. Leisurely browsing the internet while laying on a couch is like heaven. You can comfortably hold it in one hand.
Where the iPad Pro 11 is a definitive tablet, the iPad Pro 12.9 aspires to be something more. With the recent release of Apple’s Magic Keyboard, it’s clear to see that Apple intends to pitch the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. This is where the iPad Pro 12.9 shines. It’s larger screen size lends its-self to larger and wider accessories. Both the apple magic keyboard and folio keyboard provide for a better laptop tier typing experience. In addition, with the release of iPad OS 13, mouse support is also available, making it a more compelling laptop replacement. While the same accessories are available for the iPad Pro 11, The keyboard, mouse, and multitasking experiences shine brightest on the iPad Pro 12.9.
I actually own both devices. My wife owns the iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) and I recently purchased the iPad Pro 11 (2020). I take my iPad Pro 11 everywhere. My wife’s iPad Pro 12.9 never leaves the house. That said, my wife does her taxes on her iPad Pro 12.9. I would never attempt such a feat on my iPad Pro 11.
Personally, if money were no concern, I still wouldn’t want the iPad Pro 12.9. I already have a laptop… Im using it to type this blog. My iPad Pro is my Journal, Planner, and Gaming Device, (Do yourself a favor and Play Grit with PS4 controller paired to your iPad). I also enjoy browsing the internet, watching streaming apps, social media, note-taking, and highlighting regulations for my day job. That said, I am not going to build websites, design logos, or edit photos/videos on an iPad. Not yet. While the iPad Pro can handle these tasks, my laptop still beats out my iPad in overall workflow efficiency.
Example: I could batch edit 1000 photos in Light Room CC for iPad but would rather edit those photos in Light Room Classic (laptop only) which is linked to my smugmug account for easy gallery upload, management, and client delivery.
I hope this was helpful. Please drop a comment below. Tell me which iPad you decided to go with. Cheers.
