ALL FIGURED OUT
A case study by David Asbery
Becoming a recording artists was one of the first aspirations that I ever had. It was one of the first endeavors that I took seriously. I wrote songs and verses daily. I would recite them in mirrors. I would write them out and then type them up in MS Word so that I could read through my coded hand writing.
Freshmen year of college. My friend Paul and I were taking a health class. We both had an interest in music. Paul introduced me to an on campus artist named Chris G who had an an entire studio operation running out of his dorm room. It was impressive. It featured a recording set up, a color printer for cover art, a stock pile of blank CDs with cases and a CD burner. I was blown away. I recorded my first song with them in his studio. Chris G and Paul became life long friends. Chris G gave me my first copy of photoshop.
Chris G and Paul ended up transferring to different schools. I no longer had access to a studio. I began saving my money and honing my skills in areas outside of writing rhymes. I invested in my own recording / production equipment. I started making my own beats. I built a recording booth in my bedroom closet using bed foam. A friend of mine, D-Tracks of the Attic Studio located in the Bronx NY, taught me how to record my own songs using Pro Tools.
It didn’t stop there… After successfully recording my first album, I designed my own logo and website to promote my projects. It didn’t take long for me to realized that I actually had many viable talents in the visual arts and media disciplines. I continued to grow these skills while studying business in college and after graduating, I built a business providing creative solutions. Eventually, I would expanded into photography and videography.
I love Hip Hop and I am still actively writing and planning projects. My personal projects bring the best out of me. I am the best version of myself when I am in “Album Mode”. I am at my most energetic and ambitious self. My personal projects force me to stretch my creativity and capabilities further than I normally would for a client thus leading to the discovery of new products and services to provide for my clients.
My inspirations are: Jay-Z, Nas, Rick Ross, Just Blaze, and No ID.
All Figured Out. is my 3rd Album and very much work the listen if you are a fan of the artist that I mentioned. I wrote, produced and recorded all the songs. The album was mixed and mastered at Screwface World Music Group in Camden NJ.
